Kerala government is considering import of coir fibre from Sri Lanka and Philippines to tackle severe shortage and growing demand for the raw material. Kerala Coir Minister Adoor Prakash said in a press conference at Thiruvananthapuram that to strengthen domestic and international market for coir products a model coir village will be setup in the near future. The minister also said that modern coir spinning machine developed by National Coir Research & Management Institute will be commissioned within three months. The state government is also considering pension increase to labourers working in coir sector.
