In Kerala, lakhs of women devotees are celebrating the famous pongala offering today at the Aattukal Devi temple in Thiruvananthapuram.The holy ritual, noted for the largest convergence of women at one place has already entered the Guinness Book of World Records . The state government has put in place tight security for the ritual.”Aattukal devi temple, the shrine of Goddess Parvati's incarnation Kannaki is popularly known as the Sabarimala of women. With offering of Pongala, sweetened rice prepared in earthen pots, the ten day festival of the shrine comes to a close. About 35 lakh women including devotees from neighbouring states of Kerala are expected to participate.Only women devotees are permitted to take part. Elaborate transport facilities by railways and roadways have been provided for the unique ritual of God's own country.
