Kerala has bagged international recognition for the state's successful social forestry movement. Under the Billion Tree campaign of the UN to contain global warming United Nations Environmental Programme has confered the special award to Kerala for planting 18.7 million sapplings during the last four years. This has been achieved with active participation of students from across the state. State Forest Minister Binoy Viswam and forest officials received awards in different categories from UN envoy in a function attended by enviornmentalists and hundreds of school children at Thiruvananthapuram today.
