Kerala Assembly has postponed its session for two days to pay homage to Food and Civil Supplies Minister T M Jacob who passed away in Kochi last night. In a very brief session today, Speaker G Karthikeyan informed the house about the sad demise of the Minister. T M Jacob will be cremated at Piravam, Kochi tomorrow. Kerala Governor M.O.H. Farooq, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan have mourned the death of TM Jacob.The sad demise of Food & Civil supplies Minister T M Jacob is an irreparable loss for the UDF government in Kerala. With the death of Jacob, the state lost an able administrator, seasoned parliamentarian and an excellent orator. From the young age of 27 he had served Kerala as minister four times and as member of the state assembly eight times.A large number of people from different walks of life paid homage to the state Food and Civil Supplies Minister Mr T M Jacob who died at a private hospital in Kochi last night. State Ministers K M Mani, K Babu, political leaders and film personalities were among those who paid last respects to T M Jacob. The State Chief Minister Mr Ommen Chandy and other cabinet members are expected shortly.The body was brought to the Ernakulam Town Hall this morning, where it was kept for the public to pay homage. The body will be taken to Piravom later this afternoon, where it will be kept at the St. Joseph 's High School again for the public to pay last respects. The mortal remains will be laid to rest at the Kakkoor St Mary's Jacobite Church tomorrow morning.The state government has declared a three day mourning following the demise of T M Jacob. A public holiday has been declared in Ernakulam district today and in the state, tomorrow.An eminent orator and Parliamentarian, T M Jacob also served as the state Education Minister and as the Irrigation and Water Supplies Minister. An eight time member of the state Assembly, he was elected for the first time in 1977 from Piravom. He represented the Kothamangalam assembly constituency in the eighties and was elected from Piravom again from 1991 to 2011, except in 2006. T M Jacob will be remembered for his remarkable contributions in the fields of education, irrigation, water resources and culture. He was the driving force as food minister in the recent launch of one rupee rice programme and provision of ration card on the day of application itself.Close to six lakh ration cards have been distributed under the scheme. For his excellence as parliamentarian Jacob has received several awards including national shramveer award. Kerala is observing a three day mourning on TM Jacob's demise and tomorrow will be a public holiday for the state.
