In Kerala, as a major social security measure for unwed mothers, the state government has announced a comprehensive package for their rehabilitation by raising the monthly pension from 300 to 1000 rupees. Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the media after the cabinet meeting at Thiruvanathapuram that one acre land will be allocated to each one of them. The state will provide dwelling units as well. As per state government statistics there are 910 unwed mothers in Kerala, mostly in backward tribal areas of Wyanad district. Provisions of Forest Rights Act are to be utilised to rehabilitate such victims of exploitation. Mr Chandy also said that state government will assist education and employment training of children born to unwed mothers. Police has been instructed to review all such cases of exploitation and stringent action will be initiated against culprits, the Chief Minister added. Kerala Government is also exploring the possibility of linking its decision to give rice at one rupee per kilo to BPL families with the Food security Act of the Centre.
