Kenya votes in favour of new Constitution

Provisional results in Kenya indicate that the country has voted in favour of a new constitution. With more than half the votes counted from the referendum, those backing the “yes” vote have declared victory. The preliminary results show a majority of Kenyans have embraced sweeping constitutional reform. The vote was part of a deal to end the ethnic violence which tore the country apart after the 2007 elections.More than 1,300 people were killed in those clashes. Kenyans will get a new bill of rights and greater land reform after the electoral commission declare the “yes” vote as passed. Disputes over land ownership between different ethnic groups led to the turmoil in 2007. The new constitution will also see the powers of the president reduced dramatically in favour of a greater say for local leaders.
