In Assam, the world-famous Kaziranga National Park has been opened for the tourists this morning. The Park will remain open for tourists till March next year.The State Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain formally launched the elephant and jeep safaris in the presence of the tourists coming from home and abroad at a function at Mihimukh in the National Park.AIR Correspondent reports that this year a sizeable number of tourists and researchers are likely to visit the famous park following improvement of the law and order situation in the State.Around one lakh twelve thousand tourists from home and abroad visited the park last year.A World Heritage Site, the Kaziranga National Park is home to more than 70 per cent of world’s population of Indian Rhinoceros. According to latest Census, over 2,200 one-horned rhinos are available in the 850-square kilometer park located in Central Assam.Kaziranga also boasts the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006.The park is also home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalos and swamp deer. Located on the edge of the Eastern Himalaya bio-diversity hotspot, the park combines high species diversity and visibility.The Park has been granted maximum protection under the Indian law for wildlife conservation.
