Kayani gets three-year extension as Army chief

Pakistan's powerful army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has been given a three-year extension. 58-year-old Kayani, who replaced former President Pervez Musharraf as army chief in 2007, was to retire on November 28.Gilani announced a three-year extension in service for him in a televised address to the nation.Kayani is the second top most Pakistani General to get an extension in recent years. His predecessor Pervez Musharraf gave himself a tenure of nine years as the Army Chief.Gilani said the decision was made after consulting President Asif Ali Zardari to ensure continuity in crucial counter-terrorism operations.
