Press Council of India Chairman Markandey Katju has appealed to the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan to release Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh on humanitarian grounds.
In a letter addressed to Pakistan's Attorney General Irfan Qadir, Mr Katju said, he has personally gone through the evidence against Sarabjit meticulously and found it extremely weak. He said, the key witness against Sarabjit, Shaukat Salim also retracted his statement saying he gave it under police pressure.
Sarabjit's name is also not mentioned in the F.I.R. Mr Katju said, moreover, Sarabjit has already spent over 22 years on death row, with a damocles sword hanging over his head all the time.
