‘Kasab gets death sentence

The lone arrested Pakistani terrorist, Ajmal Kasab has been sentenced to death. Special judge M L Tahiliyani today pronounced his sentence in Mumbai's special court built inside Arthur Road Jail.

Judge Tahiliyani read out the 1522 page long verdict and informed that Kasab was being given death penalty by hanging on four charges that include waging war against the nation, murder, criminal conspiracy and committing terror activities. He added that Kasab has also been awarded life imprisonment on 6 other charges.

The court rejected Defence lawyer K P Pawar's plea for leniency saying that a person like Kasab cannot be given an opportunity to reform himself. After the sentence was announced, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam came out of the court flashing a victory sign and a notebook showing a picture of Kasab and a noose.

Mr. Nikam expressed his happiness over the sentencing saying that the verdict has delivered justice to the families of the victims. Mr. Nikam, who fought India's biggest terror attack case, said that the fair and open trial in the case has given a message to the entire world that in India everybody, even a dreaded terrorist, can get full opportunity to defend himself.

On the other hand Kasab's lawyer said that he had tried his best and would still continue to represent Kasab if he wishes to appeal in the high court.

Earlier this week, Kasab was found guilty of 86 charges framed against him for planning and executing the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai.

The trial, the fastest in a terror case in India, had commenced on May 8 last year in a special court which recorded 3,192 pages of evidence after examining 296 witnesses on 271 working days.
