Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai’s recent anti-west remarks is causing diplomatic wrangle with western nations who are the biggest contributor towards efforts to stabilize the war-torn country. White House spokesman Robert Gates said last night that they are frustrated with the remarks on behalf of American people. He said the substance or remarks are obviously not true. Mr. Karzai during his address to country’s Parliamentarian last week accused western nations particularly US of interfering in Presidential elections last year and trying to pressurize him for toeing their line. Mr. Karzai went as far as threatening to quit the political process and join the Taliban if he continued to come under outside pressure to reform. A Taliban spokesman welcomed Mr. Karzai’s comments saying they are Afghans, and Karzai is their brother. Western nations have been pressuring Karzai government to rein in corruption and improve governance while the latter has developed grievance over the issue of civilian casualties and attempts to malign his government image as corrupt. Mr. Hamid Karzai took over Presidency of Afghanistan after overthrow of Taliban rule in 2001 with US support but the relations between the two have soared down in last couple of years.
