Karzai visits Kandahar

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai visited Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold and its birthplace, yesterday where a US-Nato offensive is due to be launched against the militants. He was in the city along with top US commander, Gen. Staley McChrystal to win support for the anti-Taliban offensive. However, at a tribal gathering, known as Shura, the message he got was that they were not prepared for any major military opration any time soon. The tribal leaders complained of insecurity and corruption by police and officials.President Karzai assured the tribal leaders there would be no anti-Taliban military operation in Kandahar without their support. Coalition forces are expected to launch a major offensive against the Taliban there in June.
