Karzai rules out major changes in cabinet, removal of Chief EC

Afghanistan President Mr. Hamid Karzai has ruled out major changes in his cabinet and removal of election commission head saying it will not be in the national interest at this stage when second round of Presidential elections are only days away.

His comments came in wake of his rival Dr. Abdullah Abdullah setting demands before scheduled November 7 elections calling for removal of election commission head and four cabinet ministers.

Mr. Karzai said in a statement last night that he did not replace officials supporting Dr. Abdullah during the first round of elections in the interests of country’s stability and any major changes in the government will only add to confusion.

He called upon Dr. Abdullah to participate in the elections and accept the results in the interests of country. Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Monday demanded presence of his representatives in key ministries and in provincial offices to ensure fairness of elections.

Meanwhile, election commission chief Dr. Azizullah Ludin has denied that he predicted Mr. Karzai’s victory in an interview to a US newspaper.
