Afghan President Hamid Karzai today presented another list of ministers to the country's parliament after the MPs rejected 17 designated ministers last week. None of the rejected nominees are on the new list.

The new list of 16 nominees includes Zalmai Rasool, a former national security advisor slated to be foreign minister. Three women are on the revised list presented to the lower house of the parliament by Vice President Karim Khalili. The Vice-President told the parliament that the administration needed to be fully functional before an upcoming conference on Afghanistan in London slated for end of this month.

Nominees for the energy and telecommunications ministries are yet to be introduced to the parliament. The Parliamentarians rejected 17 out of 24 cabinet nominees last week and approved only seven, including the defence, interior and finance ministers.

Ismail Khan, the powerful former warlord who served as minister for energy in Karzai's first five-year term, was among those who could not get the approval from the parliament. The parliamentarians would check the nominee's credentials before a vote of confidence, which is expected to take place in coming days.
