Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai has issued warning to NATO-led forces to stop raids which claim civilian lives. His statement came after 14 civilians were allegedly killed in a NATO air strike in southern Helmand province on Saturday. Mr. Karzai condemned the incident, saying he had warned U.S. and NATO troops that their arbitrary and unnecessary operations were killing innocent people every day. He said the incident was a big mistake and shows that attention is not being paid adequately. The NATO-led coalition has apologized for the incident saying any loss of life is a true tragedy for families and friends of those killed. It said, investigations are still on but initial reports indicate five militants took refuge in a house and subsequent air strikes led to killing of nine civilians. Meanwhile, the Afghan government has accused Pakistan of harbouring the insurgents behind a suicide bombing that killed one of the most powerful men in northern Afghanistan. Dawood Dawood, the north Afghanistan police chief, along with another police commander was killed in an attack in Takhar province on Saturday. Presidential spokesman Waheed Omar told reporters that no one in Afghanistan would carry out these attacks and all evidence shows that these operations are planned outside. Afghan government has regularly accused elements of the Pakistani government of sheltering insurgents and providing them safe havens.
