In Afghanistan, incumbent President Mr. Hamid Karzai has got 54.6 percent of the total votes in preliminary results for Presidential elections announced last evening. Mr. Karzai has crossed the majority 50 percent mark needed but the final results are dependent on outcome of hundreds of fraud complaints and recounting at around 10 percent of polling centres.br/ br/Mr. Karzai’s closest rival Dr. Abdullah Abdullah has got 27.8 percent votes but has alleged of widespread fraud and called for second round of voting as a way out. Second round of elections are possible if complaints and recounting invalidate enough votes of Mr. Karzai to reduce his percentage below 50. br/br/Meanwhile, tensions have surfaced between Afghan government and its western counterparts over the outcome of elections. Country’s information minister Mr. Karim Khurram said western nations including US are trying to change the election results and are weakening Mr. Karzai’s government. br/br/The minister considered close to President Karzai, said the western governments are not in Afghanistan to fight terrorism but have their own agenda. Earlier, an EU election observation mission said massive fraud has taken place during elections and upto 15 lakh votes are suspicious. br/br/Chief electoral officer Dr. Daud Ali Najfi termed such allegations as baseless adding the mandate of observation mission is to observe and not to complain. br/br/Mr. Karzai’s Election campaign team said in a statement that comments of EU Election Monitoring Commission is partial, irresponsible and in contradiction with Afghanistan’s constitution.
