Karzai endorses US Commanders' request for more troops

Afghanistan President Mr. Hamid Karzai has endorsed a request by US top commander in Afghanistan for more troops to fight Taliban-led insurgency calling it the right approach. Mr. Karzai told a CNN interview that he supported US General McChrystal's push for more outside forces. He also advocated increased efforts to protect Afghan civilians. Mr. Karzai’s comments assume significance as the request for more troops has initiated a wider debate within US administration over its overall strategy in Afghanistan. US President said he will not be rushed into sending more troops until he is sure whether they are doing the right thing. US Secretary of state Hillary Clinton said they are not going to make any decisions of any significance until they know the outcome of the Presidential election held on August 20. Mr. Karzai has won the preliminary round but the final results are dependent on outcome of several fraud complaints and sample recounting of votes at around 12 percent of polling centers.
