Afghanistan President Mr. Hamid Karzai announced his new Cabinet today, a month after he was sworn in for the second term upon his re-election. The list of 24, sent to Parliament for ratification, contains names of 11 serving ministers while rest of the faces are newcomers. Interior Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar, Defence Minister abdul Rahim Wardak and Finance Minister have retained their positions while some of the current minister portfolios have been reshuffled.The new foreign minister is yet to be decided but serving foreign minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta will be working till the end of international conference on Afganistan, scheduled for January 28 at London. The list includes one woman Husn Banu Ghazanfar who retains her post as women's Affairs Minister. The current Afghan ambassador to India, Makhdom Raheen has been given the charge of information and culture ministry. The list does not include any names from opposition camp of Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, who had refused to join the government. The Afghan President was under intense pressure from western nations to include reform-minded technocrats in the cabinet and exclude warlords and persons with tainted background. The ministerial nominees are supposed to win the approval of parliament, with each nominee making a speech to justify their appointment. They must also answer questions from MPs about how they intend to do their job, and then face voting of MPs for their approval.
