In Haryana, Punjab, Himachal and Chandigarh Karvachauth a festival of married women (Suhagins) is being celebrated with great enthusiasm. The Women keep fast on this day for the well being and long life of their husbands and take food late in the evening after offering ARGHAYA to the moon.

In Punjab, at Amritsar central jail, special permission was given to the male and female prisoners to celebrate the festival with their spouse in the premises of the jail. The meeting hours were extended and they were allowed to stay in the jail from 9am to 5 pm.
