DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has welcomed the congress General Secretary Gulam Nabi Azad's statement on the alliance between the two parties. Azad had warned that action will be taken against those who air views that will affect the alliance. Karunanidhi said he was happy that the Congress is upholding coalition dharma. Replying to a question on his discussions with Foreign Secretary Mrs. Nirupama Rao, he said the centre has assured that a special envoy or a committee will be sent to Sri Lanka to assess the rehabilitation work being undertaken in the north and eastern parts. Earlier he had attended a meeting of Party MPs, which passed a resolution urging the centre to take necessary steps to help rehabilitate the affected Tamils in Sri Lanka . The meeting pointed out that despite assurances by the Island country, the speed of the rehabilitation work was tardy. In another resolution, the DMK wanted the centre to continue to formulate policies in a way not infringing on the rights of the state governments especially in the education sector and tax related issues. The meeting welcomed the assurance of Finance Minister Pranab Mukerjee that Goods and Services Tax will not be implemented without the unanimous approval of state governments. The party also urged the centre to give up the idea of holding a national common entrance exam for admission to medical colleges
