Karunanidhi seeks amicable solution on Mullaperiyar dam row

The DMK President and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Monday sought an amicable solution on the issue of Mullaperiyar dam. Delivering a speech on the completion of the day long hunger protest by the DMK, he said that it was unnecessary for the people of Kerala to be anxious, since the Mullapeiryar dam had been strengthened thrice since 1994, using 12 thousand tonnes of concrete.The DMK party observed a daylong hunger protest to impress upon the Centre to urge the Kerala Government to implement the Supreme Court’s order in 2006 to allow the water level to be raised to 142 feet. The advocates of Madras High Court, Sessions Court and Tribunals also chose to abstain from courts over the Mullaperyar issue.Meanwhile, thousands of farmers who went on a procession to Theni, were sent back by the police. The AIADMK government has called for a special Assembly session on Thursday to pass a unanimous resolution on the issue of Mullaperiyar.
