Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr M. Karunanidhi today criticized opposition parties for opposing the proposed Greenfield airport at Sriperumbudur near Chennai , saying that a new airport is of utmost importance. In a statement issued in Chennai today, he said, the land acquisition process for the airport had not yet commenced and only soil samples were taken in 54 places at Sriperumbudur taluk and the adjoining Tiruvallur district. The Chief Minister said the soil samples were taken to prepare the economic and technical feasibility report. Asserting that the state government would not unnecessarily acquire agricultural land or housing plots, Mr Karunanidhi said, if it becomes necessary, the government will ensure that people are given adequate compensation.
