The Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj in Karnataka, Jagadeesh Shetter informed in Legislative Assembly today that Karnataka stands in 16th place in terms of implementation of Sampoorna Swachatha Andolana or Total Sanitation Campaign.

Replying to a question, the minister pointed out that there were only 37,000 toilets in rural areas of the State when sampoorna Swachatha Andolana was introduced in the October of 2005. This has now gone up to 23 lakh today, he informed. The target is to build 55 lakh and 58,000 toilets before the scheme ends by 2012, the minister noted.

He lamented that the condition that candidates contesting Panchayat election should have toilets in their houses remains unimplemented as a case is still languishing in the High Court. This would have given big push to the Sanitation Campaign in the villages as there are 91,000 elected Panchayat members in the state, he noted. He disclosed that scheme meant for BPL families could be extended to APL families in future.
