Karnataka presents its first Agriculture budget

The Chief Minister of Karnataka B S Yeddyurappa presented state’s first Agriculture budget today. This is probably for the first time in the Country that a separate budget is presented for Agriculture sector. He has announced various measures to rejuvenate agriculture sector. Most important announcement is providing agriculture loan at just one percent. The Cooperative Sector will provide this loan to farmers in the coming fiscal year. Totally the Chief Minister has allocated Rs.17,857 crore for Agriculture, allied sectors and irrigation. He has announced Suvarna Bhoomi programme under which 10 lakh farming families will benefit. Under the programme, Commercial or Cooperative Banks will extend Rs.10,000 subsidy in two installments for taking up agriculture activities. A corpus of Rs. 500 crores has been announced for infrastructure development in this sector. He has also announced 100 crores to legalise one lakh illegal pumpsets. The children of farmers will get interest free education loan.
