In Karnataka, the leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Siddaramaiah has sought CBI inquiry on illegal mining in the state. Raising the issue in legislative Assembly on Monday, he asked Government to hand over investigation to CBI as the mining transcends state borders and involves central agencies too. He noted that the Lokayuktha report has named several politicians and 617 officials as responsible for illegal mining and estimated the loss to the state at sixteen thousand, eighty five crore rupees. It has also recommended that an amount five times of the loss, should be recovered from the accused. He charged that Government has not initiated criminal action against anyone of them. He said six months have lapsed since the report was submitted to the government and according to rules, the report is deemed to be accepted if Government does not reject it within three months. He suggested that if the mining loss is recovered from the accused, then the loan burden of one lakh crore rupees over the state, can be paid off easily.
