Karnataka HC rejects Jayalalithaa's bail plea

The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday rejected the bail application of Tamilnadu former Chief Minister J Jayalalitha and three others in the 66 crore disproportionate asset case. Justice A V Chandrashekar passed the interim orders rejecting pleas of all the four convicts.

The Judge quoted various cases of Supreme Court under Prevention of Corruption Act and pronounced that there is no ground for bail to the convicts in this case.

He also refused to suspend sentence imposed on them by the special court. The High court has not given Jayalalitha and others any relief and will have to remain in jail. The lawyers appearing for Jayalalitha said that they will approach Supreme court against the High Court order.

Dramatic scenes were witnessed outside the High court on Tuesday as bail plea hearing progressed within the court. At one point the special public prosecutor Bhavani Singh told the court that he has no objection if conditional bail is given to the convicts.

This was misunderstood by supporters of Jayalalitha who presumed that the Jugde will allow conditional bail. There was wide scale jubilation and bursting of crackers.

But the scene changed once again when the real verdict was known. The police had tough time pacifying the supporters of Jayalalitha who were agitated by the court verdict.

The police have intensified the security arrangements in the city and the state transport corporation has cancelled all its services to Tamilnadu till Wednesday.

The AIADMK supremo Jayalalitha and three others were convicted by the special court in the 66 crore rupees disproportionate asset case and imprisoned in Bangalore central jail since 27 of last month.

Jayalalitha was sentenced to four years imprisonment and imposed a fine of 100 crore rupees. In this case the other three convicts Sasikala, Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran were also pronounced with four years jail and 10 crore rupees fine.
