The hearing on former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalitha’s bail plea is adjourned for lunch in the Karnataka High Court. The argument will continue after lunch at 2.30 pm. The defence lawyer Ram Jethmalani has sought bail for his client Jayalalitha.
A special court had convicted her and three others in the 66 crore rupees disproportionate asset case. Jethmalani argued that there is precedence to such cases in the Supreme Court and if hearing prolongs further in the higher court then the convicts can be released on bail.
He also referred to the health issues concerning Jayalalitha. The Special Public Prosecutor Bhavani Singh also filed his objections before the court against giving bail to the convicts.
The court was hearing arguments from lawyers representing convicts Sasikala Natarajan, V.K. Sudhakaran and J. Ilavarasi just before the lunch break.
The supporters of Jayalalitha have gathered in large number outside the Central Jail and High Court despite the Prohibitory orders.
In another development, a lawyer in Bangalore has filed contempt of court case against AIADMK workers, Jaya TV Managing Director and Vellur city Mayor for accusing the Special Court Judge Michael D Cunha for his Judgement against Jayalalitha. A lawyers forum has also requested the High Court Registrar to shift the case to Chennai.
