Karnataka Government is planning to-take up mega road building projects worth over 13,000 crore rupees. Briefing media persons in Bangalore today after the Cabinet meeting, the law minister Suresh Kumar informed that roads connecting each district and taluk in the state will be taken up first. He informed that the State Cabinet has decided today to lay or improve over 15,000 kms stretch of roads in the next two years. An Empowerment Committee headed by the Chief Secretary will look into planning and implementation of this project. Out of the total project cost, eight thousand crores rupees will be provided by the State Government, Rs.2400 crores borrowed from financial agencies, Rs.960 from the Central Government sources and Rs.2000 crores from Karnataka Road Development Corporation. After taking up development work, 1428 kms will be made toll roads. The amount so collected will be used for maintenance. The state has over two lakh nine thousand kms of roads, out of which National Highways are 4491 kms.
