Karnataka Government has filed a fresh petition before Cauvery River Authority to stay its September 19th order to release 9000 Cusecs of water to Tamilnadu everyday. The decision was taken after Chief Minister Jagadish Shetter held a meeting with floor leaders of the assembly in Bangalore today.
Briefing the media persons later, Shetter said that they will request the Prime Minister who is the Chairman of the Authority to issue a stay on his previous order by this evening. The State Government had made a similar request in its Review Petition filed earlier to Cauvery River Authority.
Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah blamed the State Government for failing to present Karnataka’s case properly in the Apex Court. He said, the State should explore all possibilities for finding a legal solution to the situation arising out of Court order. He claimed that state needs 155 TMC water for drinking purpose and standing crops, till next monsoon, but the Cauvery reservoirs have only 69 TMC water. He said severe drought and failed monsoon has left the State with no water to share.
There were protests in Mandya, Mysore and Chamrajnagar districts over the issue. Heavy police deployment has been in place in all the reservoirs of Cauvery in the state.
