Karnataka celebrates Makara Sankranti today when the Sun moves position from the DakshiNaayana to UththaraayaNa  welcoming the spring season. Black sesame seed is used today while taking bath and sesame oil lamp is lit in temples. Thila tarpana is offered to the departed souls and thil is also given as daan. Youngsters offer ellu bella that is sesame seed and jiggery mixture to the elders and seek their blessings. In rural Karnataka decorated cows and bulls are displayed and their procession is done and they are also made to cross a fire and this custom is known as "Kichchu Haayisuvudu". The villagers can be seen going to temple in bullock carts that are innovatively decorated today. </span><br />
