Kargil is to come up on the world tourism map. Necessary infrastructure will be developed in the district. Kargil Development Authority has submitted a proposal for this for an amount of about eight crore rupees to the Centre for approval.

This was informed at a meeting of senior officials chaired by Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Minister Nawang Ringzin Jora in Srinagar today.

Kargil hit the world headlines during Operation Vijay launched by the Indian Army to regain control of outposts taken over by Pakistan in 1999.

On tourism activities in Leh, the meeting was informed that nearly 1.8 lakh tourists, including over 36 thousand foreigners, enjoyed their holiday in the region last year. Adventure tourism in Ladakh has gained much popularity in the recent times. Local youth are also being trained in the tourist trade to meet the growing demand of skilled manpower to run professional establishments.

The Tourism Development Authority, Leh, has taken up works at an estimated cost of 11 crore rupees during this year. Under the Centre sector, works for an amount of 18 crore rupees have been taken up by the Authority.
