Karadi’s defection issue rocks Karnataka Assembly

The issue of defection drowned Karnataka Legislative Assembly into sea of commotion today. In the background of JD(S) MLA Karadi Sanganna defecting to BJP yesterday, the floor leader from JD(S) Revanna moved the adjournment motion in Assembly today. The defection, code named as Operation Kamala in Karnataka was termed as anti constitutional and against the ethics of democratic principles by the Opposition members.Revanna charged that the MLAs from his party are lured with the promise of ministerial berth or board Chairman Post or through hefty kickback and with the assurance to develop their constituency. After the submission by Revanna, the Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar pointed out that the matter cannot be taken as adjournament motion as it does not specify about definite incident and mentions about disqualification of five Independents who have moved the Supreme Court. The Speaker of the House ruled that the subject matter does not come under adjournment motion as it is sub-judice.The leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah also criticized the government for maligning public life by using unconstitutional means to lure the legislatures. Unhappy over the Speaker’s ruling, the Congress staged a walkout and JD(S) MLAs descended into the well of the House in protest. At this point the Speaker adjourned the house for some time. When the House met again, the JD(S) floor leader Revanna requested the Speaker to allow the discussion on defection in the Assembly House. The Speaker K G Boppaiah asked the member to bring the issue in another shape other than the adjournment motion. When this was admitted the JD(S) members ended their dharna in the well of the House and went to their places. Thereafter the Speaker allowed the question hour.
