The former Bosnian Serb political leader, Radovan Karadic, has begun his defence at the International War Crimes Tribunal at The Hague against charges of genocide and crimes against humanity. Mr. Karadic said that instead of being put on trial, he should have been rewarded for the good work he had done. Survivors and relatives of the victims have travelled from Bosnia to see the man they hold most responsible for their suffering. Mr. Kradic denied the charges and claimed he was motivated by peace and the need to protect the Bosnian Serb people.
