Kapil Sibal rejects Arun Jaitley's contention that Centre's actions on snoopgate probe are illegitimate

Law Minister Kapil Sibal has rejected BJP leader Arun Jaitley's contention that Centre's actions on snoopgate probe are illegitimate. Insisting that a judge will be named to head the inquiry before May 16, Sibal said Jaitley should go back to law before making such statements.

The issue relates to alleged illegal surveillance carried out on a young woman in Gujarat in 2009 at the behest of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, who was the Home Minister of the state at that time.

Defending the Centre's move, Kapil Sibal asked why Narendra Modi government had itself set up a probe panel, if nothing was there for investigation. He alleged that the state probe panel was set up fearing that the Centre may appoint an inquiry and this could bring out facts that could create trouble for Modi.

He also pointed out that the state government's probe panel was supposed to give its report within three months but it has not held a single meeting till date.
