Law Minister Kapil Sibal rejects the BJP leader Arun Jaitley contention that Centre's move to name a judge to probe Snoopgate in Gujarat is illegitimate. Sibal asked why Narendra Modi government had itself set up a probe panel, if nothing was there for investigation.
He said the state probe panel was set up because of fear that a centre's panel could bring out facts that could create trouble for Modi. He also pointed out that the state government's probe panel was supposed to give its report within three months but it has not held a single meeting till date.
But, BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu says all post poll appointment of committes will be reviewed by the next government. He said in Hyderabad that the government of the day coming into office will have every right to review the decisions.
BJP leader Amit Shah also criticised the move to appoint a judge to head the snoopgate probe. He alleged in Varanasi that it was Congress' party's, what he called “dirty tricks department's work.
The issue came to the fore with Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde saying yesterday that a judge will be appointed to conduct a probe into Gujarat 'snoopgate' before counting of votes in Lok Sabha election.
The issue relates to alleged illegal surveillance carried out on a young woman in Gujarat in 2009 at the behest of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, who was the Home Minister of the state at that time. There have been allegations that Shah himself was in regular touch with the officials involved in the alleged snooping.
Gujarat government has maintained that not only the father of the woman in question but she herself was also aware that state agencies were tracking her and was thankful for it.
