Kalmadi hits out Sports Minister

Indian Olympic association, IOA, President Suresh Kakmadi today said that the Association is surprised on the government order limiting tenures of heads of sports federations ahead of the commonwealth games. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, he said the meeting of Executive Council of IOA on 18 of this month will discuss the issue. He insisted that the autonomy of the National Sports Federations is paramount and cannot be compromised. Mr. Kalmadi dismissed Sports Minister's assertion that the new guidelines will help bring transparency to the functioning of Indian Olympic Association and other Sports bodies. The secretary of the IOA Randhir Singh said that the government regulation has been forwarding to Olympic Council of Asia and International Olympic Council. He said that the IOA expects a reply in favour of it as the government regulation infringes on the working of the National Olympic Committee. President of the Rowing Federation of India K P Singh Deo ,Archery Association Cheif VK Malhotra and Indian Tennis Association President Anil Khana were also present at the press conference. The Sports Ministry yesterday modified a 1975 regulation which seeks to end the prolonged reign of a number of politicians, businessmen and bureaucrats who have been running the National Sports Federations for more than a decade. The regulation means Indian Olympic Association President Suresh Kalmadi and several NSF chiefs including V K Malhotra (archery), Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa (cycling), V K Verma (badminton), captain Satish K Sharma (aero club) and B S Adityan (volleyball) cannot seek a re-election after their present term expires.
