Kabul attack ends after 20 hrs, remaining insurgents killed

After more than 20 hours of insurgent attack on Kabul, Afghan and the NATO coalition troops have freed the building they had taken over and killed the remaining insurgents. This was announced by the Afghan interior ministry in Kabul on Wednesday. Insurgents armed with suicide vests, rocket-propelled grenades and other sophisticated weapons targeted NATO's headquarters, the U.S. Embassy, the Afghan Intelligence Agency and other areas near high security diplomatic area in Kabul on Tuesday. At least 9 people were killed and 23 injured in the attack.Six insurgents stormed a multi-story unfinished building near Kabul's high security diplomatic area on Tuesday and started firing grenades and bullets on the nearby U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters. Fierce firing and blasts continued for four hours. Throughout the night, intermittent firing continued. Early on Wednesday morning firing intensified and Afghan security forces with the help of NATO troops and helicopters killed all the insurgents holed up in the building.Afghan President Hamid Karzai, in a press release in Kabul on Tuesday evening has said that the insurgents’ attacks on Kabul were aimed at derailing the security transition process in Afghanistan. He has also said that such attacks can not stop the security transition process in the country.
