K.V Thomas: Govt committed to food security

Food and Consumer Affairs Minister, Prof. K.V Thomas today said that Government is committed to food security and ensuring adequate quantities of food at affordable prices has been the focus of planning and policy. He said this while launching the bulletin on food justice in India at a function in New Delhi. Referring to the proposed National Food Security Bill, Prof. Thomas said, the Act seeks to address the issue of food security in the country in a holistic manner by adopting a life cycle approach. Highlighting the provisions of the proposed Bill, the Minister said that it provides for about two thirds of the population to become entitled to receive subsidized food-grains under Targeted Public Distribution System, with special focus on nutritional support to women and children. He said that elaborate provisions for grievance redressal mechanism have also been made in the Bill.He said that the Bill is at present under consideration of the Standing Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution and its outcome is awaited for further action.
