Government has appointed Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar to oversee the Common Wealth Games preparations. This assumes importance in the wake of reports of alleged financial irregularities by the games organising committee. Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in a recent report to the sports ministry has cited over a dozen cases including one where the games Organizing Committee suffered a loss of over 5 million US dollars in awarding broadcasting rights for the games. The report says the rights were awarded at the behest of Mike Fennell, the head of the Commonwealth Games Federation, chief executive Mike Hooper and Suresh Kalmadi, the top Indian organizer. Official sources said that it has not been decided yet whether Mr. Kalmadi will continue as the head of the organising committee.
