K M Chandrasekhar appointed to oversee CWG preparations

Government has appointed Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrasekhar to oversee the Common Wealth Games preparations. He held a meeting today evening to take stock of the preparations for the games. Official sources said that he has been monitoring the preparations for quite some time now.Mr. Chandrashekher was appointed after the reports of alleged financial irregularities by the games organising committee. Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in a recent report to the sports ministry has cited over a dozen cases including one where the games Organizing Committee suffered a loss of over 5 million US dollars in awarding broadcasting rights for the games. The report says the rights were awarded at the behest of Mike Fennell, the head of the Commonwealth Games Federation, chief executive Mike Hooper and Suresh Kalmadi, the top Indian organizer. Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate is looking at the source and gateways through which payment was made for Queens Baton Relay in London in October last year. The BJP has decided to take up the issue in Parliament on Monday. Party leader Gopinath Munde said that the BJP is not satisfied with the reply of the Sports Minister and wants a response from the Prime Minister. On the other hand senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh has said that Mr. Suresh Kalmadi should not quit if his name does not figure in the list of the accused.
