Justice Soumitra Sen has resigned as a judge of the Calcutta High Court. Justice Sen has sent his resignation letter to President Pratibha Patil and the Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar.The Lok Sabha was scheduled to take up his impeachment proceedings against the Judge on Monday. The Rajya Sabha voted in favour of impeaching him on 18th of last month.In the day long discussion leagel lumnaries who are members of the house called for setting up a Judicial Accountability Commission to ensure transparency and accountability in the higher Judiciary.Justice Sen has been found guilty of misappropriating funds as a judge and of misrepresenting facts. A special committee constituted by Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari had found charges of financial irregularities against Justice Sen to be correct.He is accused of misappropriating nearly 24 lakh rupees in the 1980s when he was a lawyer and was appointed receiver by the Calcutta High Court.
