Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar will be sworn-in as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) today. President Pranab Mukherjee will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Justice Khehar at a function in Rashtrapati Bhawan. Justice Khehar will be the 44th CJI and replace Justice TS Thakur whose tenure ended yesterday. Justice Khehar's tenure will be till the 27th of August this year.<br/><br/>Justice Khehar had led the five-judge constitution bench in the Supreme Court which struck down the National Judicial Appointments Commission Act for appointment of judges. He had also headed a bench which set aside the imposition of President's rule in Arunachal Pradesh in January.<br/><br/>Justice Khehar was also part of the bench which sent Sahara Chief Subrata Roy to jail while hearing the matter relating to the refund of money invested by people in his two companies.<br/><br/>Yesterday, the Supreme Court had once again dismissed a plea challenging the appointment of Justice Khehar as CJI, saying it is in the public interest that the curtain should be brought down. The court had dismissed two similar pleas filed in the past fortnight challenging his appointment.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, in his farewell address in the apex court premises, outgoing CJI, Justice Thakur asked the judiciary to be ready for future challenges to ensure that the nation remains an inclusive society. He expressed concern over the lack of judges amid the growing pendency of cases. Justice Thakur said, there are about three crore pending cases in courts across the country and the issue has to be tackled efficiently given the paucity of judges.<br/><br/>On the emerging areas of litigations, Justice Thakur said, in the coming times, judiciary will have very serious issues regarding cyber laws, medico-legal cases, genetics and privacy.
