Justice A. P Shah headed Group of experts recommends setting up of Privacy Commission.

Justice A. P Shah headed Group of experts has recommended setting up a Privacy Commission of India and to appoint Privacy Commissioners at the Centre and State levels to monitor and penalise offences against infringement of Privacy of individuals. Justice Shah also suggested for having internal self regulatory mechanisms in both government and private sector for observing privacy principles. Briefing the media in New Delhi after submiting the Expert Group's report to the Government, Justice Shah said, the Privacy commission will lay down the limitations and countours of implementation of privacy principles in the country.

Justice Shah said, Privacy law is expected to serve as an overarching law harmonising with existing definitions under laws in force, Sensitive Personal information, Personally identifying Information and indirectly identifiable information. The Privacy Act would establish National level Privacy principles with respect to collection, processing, storage, acess and retention of personal data of an individual. Justice Shah said, the recommendations also include that interception of telephone calls would require judicial ratification in the long term.
