Journalist dies in Manipur as police try to control agitators

In Manipur, one journalist died in police firing while police disperse agitators in Imphal City. The state film and music organisations and civil society bodies have called a state-wide indefinite bandh since Friday. They were demanding immediate arrest of the NSCN (IM) cadre who allegedly molested and assaulted a Manipuri actress on Tuesday last.

Police sources said, the incident took place this afternoon at around one while the bandh supporters were trying to set ablaze a vehicle at Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai under Imphal City Police Station in Imphal West.

Police resorted to open fire to disperse the bandh supporters and the journalist died in the incident. The deceased has been identified as Chandam Nanao of the same locality. He is reportedly a cameraman of a Guwahati based television news channel.

Meanwhile, curfew has imposed in the whole areas of Imphal West District from 2 PM this afternoon till six tomorrow morning by the District administration in view of the tense situation in Imphal and its adjoining areas.
