Jordan suspends foreign worker recruitment to boost jobs for locals

Jordan has decided to suspend the recruitment of foreign workers to give a boost to the employment to Jordanian workers.Labour minister Nidal Katamine said the move will help tide over the rising unemployment among the local population in the country. Our West Asia correspondent reports that the Jordanian Labour Minister Nidal Katamine said that around two million foreigners are currently staying and working in the country and nearly half of them are without work permits.The rising number of Syrian refugees has also added to the worries of the Government on how to tackle growing unemployment in the country.According to official estimates, unemployment rate during the first quarter of this year was 12.8 per cent, compared to 11.4 per cent during the same period last year. The jobless rate was 11.1 per cent among men and 20.5 per cent among women and 17.2 percent among university graduates.The move comes at a time when Jordan is grappling with budgetary deficit,rising inflation, unemployment and stain on the local economy due to rise in number of Syrian refugees.
