J&K: Security forces cordon off gunfight area in Pulwama district

In Jammu & Kashmir, various areas and hamlets including vast area of Padgampora continued to remain under cordon of security forces since yesterday late afternoon following gunfight with the militants in Awantipora area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district. The encounter ensued after security forces launched anti militancy operation near Goripora area of Awantipora. The area is in close vicinity of Indian Air Force's Awantipora Base, one of the largest aerodromes in north India.<br/><br/>Inspector General Police Kashmir Range Javed Mujtaba Gillani told AIR that two militants were killed in a gunfight in a plant nursery near Wandakhpora village of the district last night. One of the slain Lashkar militants Abu Okasha, was wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Udhampur National Highway attack on a BSF convoy in August last year that resulted into death of two BSF troopers. PRO Defence denied reports of injuries to three army personnel during the gunfight. This is the third major operation in south Kashmir during this month. Six militants have been killed in these operations so far. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, clashes broke out near the encounter site last night as youths attacked the security forces with stones. Reports said that villagers, mostly youths came out and pelted stones at the security forces in the area where gunfight was going on. The situation in the area was reported tense. The Railway authorities suspended the train service on Srinagar Banihal route in south Kashmir fearing public protests or other law and order problem. The service will only ply from Srinagar to Baramulla in north Kashmir today.
