J&k Rural Development and Law Minister escapes attempt on his life

Jammu and Kashmir Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar escaped an attempt on his life by militants who attacked his entourage last night as he entered his ancestral house in downtown Srinagar. Sagar, one of the senior National Conference leaders, who holds Rural Development and Law portfolios, was unharmed in the attack. Police said, unidentified militants opened fire on Sagar and his entourage as soon as he arrived at his Nawab Bazaar residence Nawakadal area to attend a family function. One security personnel was killed and three persons injured in the incident. The injured include two security personnel and one civilian. No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. Last night's attack is the first in recent years where a political figure was targeted by militants in the old city area. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Minister of State for Home Nasir Sogami condemned the attack and directed the state police to ensure speedy investigation to bring to book the culprits. Opposition Peoples Democratic Party said it is relieved to know that the minister is safe.
