J&K pays tributes to Saviour of Kashmir Brig Rajinder Singh Jamwal on his martyrdom day

In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the martyrdom day of Brigadier Rajinder Singh Jamwal, popularly known as the Saviour of Kashmir is being celebrated in a big way today.<br />”<br />”AIR correspondent reports that several functions are being organised to pay tributes to the martyr. The main function is being held at Brigadier Rajinder Singh Chowk behind the Civil Secretariat in Jammu.<br />”<br />”Brigadier Rajinder Singh was born on 14th June 1899 in Bhagoona Village of Samba district in Jammu Division, was an officer in the Jammu and Kashmir State Forces who attained martyrdom on 26th October 1947 fighting during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948.<br />”<br />”He was commissioned into the J&amp;K State Forces as a Second Lieutenant on 14th June 1921 and on 25th September 1947, he took over charge as Chief of Army Staff of J&amp;K State Forces from Major General H. L. Scott. Brigadier Rajinder Singh and his men successfully delayed the forward movement of a much larger contingent of Pakistani regulars and tribal raiders towards Srinagar until the Indian Army arrived.<br />”<br />”<span style="color: #222222;">On 30th December 1949, he became independent India's first recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, India’s second highest military decoration, when he was awarded the honour posthumously by the then Army Chief Field Marshall K. M. Cariappa.</span><br />
