In Jammu and Kashmir polling for panchayat elections in eight blocks of the State which began at eight on Wednesday morning is going on smoothly. Polling is being held in eight blocks including Bishnah, Samba and Udhampur in Jammu district and Kangan, Budgam, Qoimoh and Kupwara in Kashmir region. About 70 percent pollign was reported from Udhampur block till a short while ago and the poll percentage is likely to touch 80 percent. Huge enthusiasm was seen among the electorate especially among the youth who were to cast their vote for the first time. Similar reports have also come from Samba and Bishnah blocks in Jammu Division. Meanwhile, reports pouring in from Kashmir say that ignoring the separatists' call for boycott, residents of Qaimoh block in Kulgam district today turned out in large numbers to cast votes in the first phase of Panchayat elections, which are being held in Jammu and Kashmir after a gap of 10 years. Elaborate security arrangements have been made by the Government to ensure free, fair and peaceful panchayat polls.
