J&K: Normal life hit by bandh against alleged failure of govt to rehabilitate flood victims

In Jammu & Kashmir, the normal life was today affected in Kashmir valley in response to strike call by traders against alleged failure of both state and central governments to rehabilitate the flood victims particularly traders, a year after the flood waters swept the valley especially Srinagar city. The call had been supported by opposition National Conference, transporters, hoteliers, private school associations, shops, business establishments. Most educational institutions remained closed. The attendance in govt, semi government offices, banks, universities and other institutions, was largely affected.<br/><br/> Public transport was off the roads. The scanty private transport was plying in capital city. Kashmir University postponed all its examinations today. Similar reports of disruption in normal life were received from district headquarters. Authorities imposed curbs on the movement of Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) Chairman Showkat Chowdhary, Kashmir Traders & Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) President Yasin Khan and other trade union leaders, to hold any anti-government protests. Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI) condemned the govt action on trader bodies. <br/><br/>Doctors and paramedics of Kashmir hospitals also protested against government's alleged failure to restore flood-hit hospitals. Black bands were worn by doctors and paramedics in response to the call given by Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK), Resident Doctors Association (RDA), and Medical Employees Federation (MEF). At least 300 people had been killed and thousands rendered homeless in floods last year. Properties and standing crops, worth thousands of crores of rupees were destroyed in the deluge.
